Wheels
Skateboard wheels have a 'durometer' rating. This is simply the softness of the urethane. The lowest being 75a (very soft) to about 98a (very hard). Softer urethane rolls slower but provides more grip on most surfaces. (however on very slick surfaces such as a skatepark/bowl, harder wheels provide better grip). Harder urethane rolls faster but also loses traction easier.
Wheel size and shape make a huge difference as well. A wider wheel travels faster and provides better traction. A thicker 'lip' on the wheel provides more rebound through hard carves (pushing the rider out of a turn). This means more power gained from carving/pumping. A thinner lip gives less rebound, but in most situations will give more grip.
